Funding Legacy
In 1988, Petro-Canada sponsored the Olympic Torch Relay and subsequently, created the Olympic Torch Scholarship Fund (OTSF) from the proceeds of Torch Relay glasses as a legacy of the Calgary Olympic Winter Games. Since that time, over $6 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 2,000 non-carded athletes and coaches, making this program one of the largest sources of such private funding in Canada.
Twenty years later, Petro-Canada has entered a new era of athlete development as a National Partner for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Working closely with our partners from VANOC, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees and the Coaching Association of Canada, we redesigned the OTSF program and developed the Petro-Canada Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE)TM program. This exciting program encompasses essential needs of athlete and coach development and will help our athletes achieve podium success in 2010.
Developing Canadian Athletes and Coaches for 2010 and Beyond
Petro-Canada's $2.8 million support extends to FACETM - a funding program that focuses on developing the skills and capabilities of Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes and coaches.
It is Petro-Canada's longstanding belief that access to best coaching practices, retention of top talent and rigorous training are essential for podium performances. As part of our commitment to supporting Canadian athletes and coaches in our communities early on in their development, Petro-Canada is contributing $3 million in support to the Own the Podium 2010. Our focus is to support Canadian athletes with access to best coaching talents available and to help Canada become the number one nation in terms of medals won at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and place in the top three nations at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.
Petro-Canada is committed to preserving the athlete development legacy and to lending support beyond our current Olympic sponsorship of 2012.
