Carrying the Canadian flag into the opening or closing ceremony at the Olympic or Paralympic Games is an unforgettable moment. The athlete proudly represents our nation and leads the team into the stadium.
Initiated at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002, the James Worrall Flag Bearer Award provides recognition to opening and closing ceremony Canadian flag bearers in Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The award is named in honour of legendary Olympian and 1936 opening ceremony flag bearer, James Worrall. The award consists of a beautiful sculpture designed and created by renowned Canadian artist Micah Lexier. Like our athletes, it is solid, impressive and undeniably Canadian. Athens 2004 marked the first time Paralympic athletes received the award.
