In 2005, Petro-Canada decided to enter Norway, which offers a stable operating environment and significant exploration potential. Norway presents a new growth area for Petro-Canada in the North Sea. The company believes it is well placed to succeed in Norway given our offshore experience in other areas of the North Sea and in similar harsh offshore environments of East Coast Canada.
Since entering Norway in 2005, Petro-Canada has been awarded 17 licenses with a net acreage covering over 5,600 square kilometres. Petro-Canada operates five of these licenses. Our ambition is to become a participant across the full spectrum of Norway's Continental Shelf, in both mature and frontier areas of Norway's North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea.
We've established a branch office in Stavanger, Norway, to operate and manage Petro-Canada's business in the country. Our drilling program involves one or two exploration wells per year, beginning with our first non-operated well in mid-2008 and our first operated well in 2009.
